Framework’s new Laptop 12 is a “purest manifestation” of its vision, inspired by the One Laptop Per Child project. The laptop features a durable and repairable design, with a choice of five colors, 13th Gen Intel Core processors, and a 1920×1200 display that delivers >400 nits of brightness.
The company’s founder and CEO, Nirav Patel, worked on the OLPC project, creating open source camera and computer vision libraries for the Sugar OS. Framework’s Laptop 12 is available in Windows or Linux options, with an optional color-matched stylus, and features a modular design that allows for easy upgrades.
With a focus on durability and repairability, the laptop comes with an overmolded shock-absorbing TPU and rigid PC/ABS plastic, making it hard to break and easy to fix. The 13th Gen Intel Core processor offers i3 and i5 variants, along with up to 48GB of DDR5-5200 RAM and 2TB of NVMe storage.
The laptop is expected to be available for pre-order in April, with shipments in mid-2025, although pricing has not been announced yet. Framework’s vision for a laptop that is both functional and accessible resonates with the OLPC project’s goal of providing affordable and durable laptops to students in developing countries.
