Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ star pass-rusher, has requested a trade out of the team, but the Browns are adamant that something can be worked out with him. Garrett, 29, has reportedly told Cleveland he is not open to a contract extension with the team.
The situation could get more complicated if the Browns decide to listen to offers, as two insiders reported on Sunday that the Buffalo Bills are expected to pursue Garrett. ESPN’s Dan Graziano also reported that the Bills and Eagles will be “most aggressive” teams in pursuit of Garrett.
A trade would significantly impact Garrett’s cap hit, with a $36.2 million charge if it happens before June 1. However, waiting until after June 1 could allow the Browns to spread out this charge over two seasons.
While the Browns may not feel compelled to honor Garrett’s trade request until they become convinced he won’t play for them, his impressive performance on the field suggests that he is committed to Cleveland. The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year and six-time All-Pro has recorded double-digit sack totals in every season since 2018.
For Buffalo, adding a game-wrecker like Garrett would be a major upgrade to their pass rush, which has struggled in meaningful postseason games over the past few seasons.
