Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa died under mysterious circumstances in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home. The investigation has revealed a complex timeline of events leading up to their deaths.
Carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled out as the cause of death, leaving officials to focus on other factors. A search warrant affidavit revealed that Hackman fell and broke his cane, while Arakawa’s body showed signs of decomposition, including mummification of her hands and feet.
The couple’s two dogs were found dead, with one body located just 15 feet from Arakawa in a closet. Two dogs were also discovered alive, one in the bathroom where Arakawa was found and another outside. Authorities have described the circumstances as “suspicious.”
The Santa Fe sheriff’s department is still trying to piece together a timeline of events, with officials citing the couple’s private nature as a potential roadblock. Hackman’s pacemaker recorded its last event on February 17, more than a week before his body was discovered.
As Hollywood shares condolences and memories of the Oscar-winning actor, questions about what led to their deaths remain unanswered. The investigation will continue to work “backwards” to try to clarify the events surrounding the couple’s tragic end.
