BWI Airport Grounded Due to Downed Power Line

A downed power line south of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport caused significant disruptions on Monday morning, leaving over 100 flights delayed and dozens canceled. The electrical team worked quickly to restore power, which was out around 8 am, affecting some areas but not others.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company confirmed the outage began at 7:40 am due to a downed power line in the 7600 block of WB&A Road in Severn. The airport’s security checkpoints reopened after crews restored power by noon, allowing airlines to resume operations.

Airline operations will take time to “fully resume regular operations,” according to airport spokesperson Jonathan Dean. Airport staff distributed water to customers during the outage and after power was restored, and airline employees worked with teams at BWI to serve customers on flights impacted by the power outage.

The airport’s main hub for Southwest Airlines, which accounts for 70% of its traffic, saw significant delays with long lines at check-in counters and TSA checkpoints. A spokesperson for Southwest expressed gratitude to their customers for their patience during the disruptions.
