UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has proposed a peace plan for Ukraine and Russia, which includes European countries taking on more responsibility for security guarantees in the event of a peace deal. The plan was unveiled during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The UK is prepared to deploy troops and air force assets to ensure Russia does not infringe on a peace agreement, but Starmer acknowledged that US backing is crucial to the success of the plan. European leaders are discussing a 30-day freeze on strikes from the air, sea, and energy infrastructure in Ukraine, which could be used as a bargaining chip for a wider peace deal.
However, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism about the need for security guarantees, instead emphasizing the importance of a strong Ukrainian army. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ruled out providing security guarantees until there is a peace agreement in place.
The situation remains tense after a public spat between Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump at the White House last week. Many Republicans on Capitol Hill have rallied behind Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy, with some calling for the Ukrainian leader to resign or change his approach.
