Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen has resigned after a board investigation into his personal conduct. The investigation found that McMullen’s actions violated company policy, but were unrelated to the business operations of the company.
McMullen, 64, had led Kroger for over a decade and was responsible for the company’s growth and multiple acquisitions, including the acquisition of Harris Teeter and Roundy’s supermarkets. However, his personal conduct has raised concerns among investors and stakeholders.
Ronald Sargent, former CEO of Staples, has been appointed as interim CEO effective immediately. The board has formed a search committee to find a permanent replacement for McMullen.
Sargent has extensive experience in the retail industry, having led Staples for 15 years until 2016. He also has a strong background with Kroger, having started his career there in 1989 and working his way up through various roles over the years.
The investigation found that McMullen’s conduct was not related to the company’s financial performance or operations but was “inconsistent with Kroger’s policy on business ethics.”
