Trudeau Vows to Fight U.S. Tariffs Amid Threats to Canadian Economy

Canada is set to retaliate against US tariffs with 25% tariffs on $155 billion of American goods, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed to protect the country’s economy and jobs. The US administration announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian exports and 10% tariffs on Canadian energy, sparking outrage from Ottawa.

The move is seen as unjustified, given Canada’s significant contributions to combating fentanyl in the US. In fact, seizures of fentanyl at the border have dropped by 97% since December 2024, thanks to a joint effort with the US.

Trudeau warned that Americans would pay more for groceries and gas, and potentially lose thousands of jobs, if tariffs come into effect. The Canadian government is also exploring non-tariff measures to counter the US action.

In response to the proposed tariffs, Canada will impose 25% taxes on $30 billion worth of American goods immediately, with the remaining $125 billion facing tariffs in 21 days’ time. Trudeau emphasized that Canada remains committed to standing up for its economy and workers, despite the threat of retaliation from the US.
