Chinese phone-maker Honor has outlined plans to provide seven years of Android OS and security updates for its flagship phones, matching industry leaders Samsung and Google. Starting with the Honor Magic 7 Pro, this commitment will extend the lifecycle of devices, ensuring users have a secure and reliable device that evolves alongside their needs.
The move addresses consumer demand for devices that offer superior performance, reliability, and durability. According to Fei Fang, Honor’s president of products, updates allow devices to keep pace with user demands. However, guaranteeing seven years of support poses significant challenges, including the need for collaborative coordination with chip manufacturers and ecosystem partners.
Despite the complexities, Fang believes Google’s AI feature updates are an opportunity for Honor to build a leading global AI device ecosystem. The company views AI features as a foundation rather than a barrier to update delivery.
Industry analyst Ben Wood describes this move as a “big step” for Honor, putting it on par with market leaders Samsung and Google. As other Chinese smartphone makers consider following suit, Honor’s pledge sets a new standard in the industry.
