Bird flu cases are on the rise, leading to high egg prices of nearly $7 a dozen in stores. To avoid these costs, many residents in Cambria County are buying their own chickens. One borough reminded residents that owning chickens is not allowed, but East Taylor Township has taken a different approach.
Chairman Rickey Price says his township is looking to revise its ordinances to make it easier for residents to keep chickens. Currently, residents only need to fence their chickens and meet setback requirements. The chairman believes this allows people to find alternative ways to save money on egg costs.
An East Taylor resident, Jamie Nagle, agrees that raising chickens is a cost-effective solution. She buys her own hens, which provide fresh eggs, grass-fed produce, and other benefits. Nagle even sells excess eggs to the community, generating income from her backyard farm.
While owning chickens is allowed in East Taylor, Price warns that rules may vary in other communities. Residents should check with their local municipality before bringing home a flock of birds. With bird flu prices soaring, many are turning to backyard farming as a way to save money and access fresh produce.
