Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa Dead in Santa Fe Home

Gene Hackman, the Oscar-winning actor, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, a classical pianist, were found dead in their Santa Fe home nearly a week ago. Authorities have launched an investigation into their deaths, but officials say they found no external trauma on either person.

Detectives recovered several items during the search of the residence, including two cellphones, an orange prescription bottle, and a 2025 planner. Former FBI investigator Bill Daly explained that every piece of evidence will be crucial in determining when and how Hackman and Arakawa died.

The investigation is focused on toxicology results and geolocating around the property to see what was pinging around the time of their deaths. Toxicology tests have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning, but authorities are still looking into other possibilities.

Hackman’s pacemaker stopped working nine days before his body was discovered, with the last recorded activity occurring on February 17. The Santa Fe County Sheriff confirmed that Hackman tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning.

A certified senior crime scene analyst noted that Arakawa’s decomposition showed signs of heat and low humidity, suggesting a possible space heater near her body. The analyst questioned whether there was an accident or intentional act involved in their deaths.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities reviewing the surrounding community and potential cameras to piece together what happened.
