Samsung Unveils Project Moohan XR Headset at Mobile World Congress

Samsung has confirmed plans to launch its extended reality headset, dubbed Project Moohan, this year. The device is a response to Apple’s $3,500 Vision Pro and aims to merge the digital and physical worlds. Key features include four cameras for gesture control and touch controls on the side.

The operating system, Android XR platform, will be developed in collaboration with Qualcomm and Google. It is expected to enable wearers to interact with AI assistants like Google Gemini, allowing for more intuitive navigation through apps and tasks.

According to executive vice president Patrick Chomet, the breakthrough technology lies in combining advanced vision capabilities with intelligence that understands user intention. Chomet hinted at a future where smarter AI digital assistants will understand user requirements on devices.

Samsung’s foray into XR headsets follows its previous work in virtual reality, which never gained significant traction. However, advancements in displays and chips have made mixed or extended reality an attractive frontier in computing.

The company also teased a pair of glasses, which could be a different type of future XR headset. Companies like Meta, Snap, and XReal are developing augmented reality glasses, where digital images are overlaid on the real world.

While no exact timeline has been provided for the launch of the glasses product, Chomet suggested that people may use multiple devices, with smartphones still being the most widely used device.
