Google has announced that the release of Android 16 is ahead of schedule, with plans to roll out the next version of its operating system in June. This accelerated timeline is largely due to the introduction of Trunk Stable, a new development process designed to improve how fast new features are created and tested for stability.
According to Sameer Samat, Google’s president of the Android ecosystem, Trunk Stable allows all developers working on Android to contribute to the same branch of code, rather than individual branches that need to be merged later. This approach has enabled Google to push up its release schedule while still ensuring that the final product is stable.
While details about what features will be included in Android 16 are limited, early betas have showcased some promising new features, including Live Updates, improved Google Wallet functionality, and enhanced camera software. With Google I/O just around the corner, which begins on May 20-21, there’s a good chance we’ll hear more about the upcoming version of Android.
