The Edmonton Oilers have made a move to bolster their roster ahead of the playoffs, acquiring forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones from the Boston Bruins in a multiteam trade.
New Jersey is the third-party facilitator of the deal, which involves Edmonton retaining 50% of Frederic’s salary while sending Boston unsigned draft picks. In return, the Oilers will receive prospect Max Wanner and two draft picks from St. Louis.
Frederic, a physical winger, was brought in to add depth to Edmonton’s bottom-six line. However, he has been sidelined with an injury that may keep him out of action for several weeks. The 27-year-old was Boston’s first-round pick in 2016 but has struggled to find his place in the organization.
Jones, who played most of the season in the AHL, will provide Edmonton with some depth insurance. With Edmonton currently second in the Pacific Division, this move is seen as a strategic acquisition ahead of the playoffs.
The Bruins are looking to make moves at the deadline for the first time in a long time, and captain Brad Marchand’s future remains uncertain after discussing a new contract with the team.
