US equities indexes declined at midday Tuesday as new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China took effect. The Nasdaq dropped 0.6%, while the Dow and S&P 500 lost more than 1%.
Best Buy shares fell after the retailer warned that tariffs and inflation would harm its business. Tesla shares also plummeted amid concerns about tariff impacts and weak China sales.
In contrast, Walgreens Boots Alliance shares jumped on a report it’s close to being taken private in a $10 billion deal. Enphase Energy and First Solar shares rose as US solar power equipment providers could benefit from tariffs on Chinese products.
Oil futures declined, while gold prices advanced, and the 10-year Treasury yield fell. The US dollar lost ground to key currencies, and most cryptocurrencies traded lower.
