A leading dietician has warned people to exercise caution when taking certain supplements due to potential risks, especially for those on blood thinners like warfarin. Victoria Taylor, a dietician from the British Heart Foundation, emphasizes that getting nutrients from a balanced diet is always best.
She specifically highlights three supplements to be wary of: vitamin K, omega-3, and St John’s wort. These can interact with warfarin, increasing the risk of side effects. The NHS advises against taking St John’s wort while on warfarin, and individuals should consult their doctor before taking vitamin K or omega-3 supplements.
Victoria recommends that people talk to their GP before adding any supplements to their regimen, as they may not be necessary. The only universally recommended supplement is vitamin D, which is essential for people, especially during autumn and winter months when sunlight helps produce it. A healthy diet provides all the necessary nutrients, making supplements unnecessary for most people.
