A week-long wildfire raging on Japan’s northeastern coast has spread to become the worst the country has seen in half a century. The blaze, located near Ofunato in Iwate prefecture, has engulfed 2,600 hectares of land and is continuing to grow. Japanese firefighters are struggling to contain the fire, which has surpassed 1975’s largest wildfire. Snow or rainfall on Wednesday may provide relief by alleviating dry conditions.
