A Southwest Airlines plane bound for Phoenix was forced to return to Houston’s Hobby Airport after a passenger, who claimed to be experiencing a mental breakdown due to bipolar disorder, caused a disturbance on the flight. The woman, naked and screaming, walked up and down the aisle of the packed plane, harassing fellow passengers and crew members.
According to eyewitnesses, she began berating those around her, pounding on cockpit doors, and jumping up and down in frustration. One passenger managed to capture the incident on cellphone video, showing the woman’s emotional state.
The plane was diverted after the woman claimed she wanted off the flight and refused to stay seated. After being covered with a blanket by airport staff, she attempted to flee, but was ultimately taken into custody and hospitalized for evaluation. The airline apologized for the delay in travel due to the incident and expressed appreciation for its passengers’ patience.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the cause of false alerts received by nearby aircraft at Ronald Reagan Airport prior to the flight’s diversion.
