Samsung has revealed its upcoming headset will feature “state-of-the-art displays” from Google’s Android XR, with reports suggesting a 1.35-inch 3552×3840 micro-OLED display supplied by Sony. This is the same display used in Sony’s SRH-S1 standalone headset and Apple Vision Pro, but with a wider color gamut of 96% DCI-P3 coverage compared to 92% in Apple’s model.
The Sony display has a taller aspect ratio, which may help Samsung’s headset avoid the narrow vertical field of view experienced by Apple Vision Pro. The new display also boasts raw brightness of 1200 nits, higher than Apple’s 1000 nits.
It is unclear whether the Sony display will be used in an updated version of the Vision Pro or if Apple plans to switch to BOE, which supplies micro-OLED displays for other headsets. LG has shown a “next generation” 4K micro-OLED display with even wider gamut and sufficient brightness, but it’s unlikely this would be production-ready for the next Vision Pro.
Note: The resolution of the display mentioned in the original text is not actually lower than Apple’s.
