Target Corporation is facing a 40-day boycott due to its recent decision to scale back its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies. The boycott, dubbed “Target Fast,” aims to pressure the retailer into reversing its changes.
The boycott began on Wednesday and will last until May 16. Organizers, led by Atlanta-based Rev. Jamal Bryant, are urging consumers to avoid spending money at Target for the duration of Lent. The group claims that Target’s decision to alter its DEI policies is a betrayal of minority communities, particularly Black Americans.
Target’s CEO had stated that the company was committed to creating a sense of belonging for its team and guests through inclusion. However, some have accused the retailer of diluting its commitment to diversity and equity.
The boycott has been supported by various minority business owners, including those from companies like Beautiful Curly Me and Lip Bar. They argue that Target’s changes will negatively impact their businesses and hinder their ability to reach a wider audience.
As part of the boycott, consumers are being asked to divest from Target stockholders and gather data on how the boycott affects the company once it ends. The goal is to hold Target accountable for its actions and encourage the retailer to reassess its DEI policies.
