As a journalist who had invested 15 years in building a following on Twitter, I thought I’d have to leave the platform when Elon Musk took over. But after trying alternative social media platforms like Mastodon and BlueSky, I’m thrilled to say that I’ve found a new home.
I remember tweeting about my concerns with Musk’s takeover back in April 2022, but I stuck around despite the chaos that ensued. However, after Musk announced changes to the block feature, allowing users blocked by others to see their posts, many people, including me, left Twitter for good.
The final straw came when Donald Trump won the election, and it became clear that X was becoming a platform owned by a government-aligned billionaire with the power to manipulate content. The algorithm prioritized crypto scams, AI bots, and conspiracy theorists over users’ voices, making it unbearable to stay.
I switched to BlueSky, which has been a game-changer for me. The platform doesn’t pigeonhole users based on their interests, allowing me to build communities around shared passions beyond just news and politics. I’ve gained thousands of new followers since joining, and my engagement has increased significantly compared to Twitter.
Leaving Twitter was the right decision for me. As a journalist, I should be focusing on providing good information to those who want it, not arguing with trolls or entertaining toxic behavior. BlueSky is a breath of fresh air, offering a space where users can connect without the constant abuse and manipulation.
If you’re tired of being sucked into Twitter’s algorithm-driven vortex, join me on BlueSky. It may have its kinks, but it’s already miles ahead of X in terms of promoting meaningful connections and community building.
