Alibaba Unveils AI Model Beating Rivals OpenAI and DeepSeek

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence reasoning model, QwQ-32B, which boasts exceptional performance surpassing rival models from OpenAI and startup DeepSeek. The announcement caused a surge in Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares, closing 8% higher on the day.

The release of QwQ-32B comes a day after another company launched a “general AI agent” called Manus, which claims to carry out complex tasks such as screening resumes and creating websites. However, Alibaba’s new model has achieved a significant leap in mathematics, coding, and general capabilities, rivaling DeepSeek’s R1 model.

Alibaba’s QwQ-32B boasts 32 billion parameters compared to DeepSeek’s 671 billion, indicating a more efficient and smaller model. The company claimed that its new model delivers “tangible results,” such as producing reports recommending properties to buy based on specific criteria.

This latest development in AI has sparked renewed interest in the tech industry, with global investors showing confidence in Chinese companies’ innovative capabilities. Alibaba’s previous AI models have also shown impressive performance, including Qwen 2.5 Max, which surpassed DeepSeek’s V3 model released just a few weeks prior. The company has pledged to invest at least 380 billion yuan ($52.4 billion) in its AI and cloud computing infrastructure over the next three years.
