Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Jose Dotres recently announced the launch of a new telehealth service in partnership with Hazel Health and UnitedHealthcare. The initiative aims to provide accessible mental health resources for students, particularly during school hours.
The new service allows students to see a doctor at the nurse’s office with parental consent, making it an “empowerment tool” that can change people’s lives, according to Hazel Health President Andrew Post. Mental health concerns are on the rise among US youth, with recent data showing that two in five high school students struggled with persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2023.
The launch comes as Miami-Dade Schools continues to address its vaccination efforts, reporting a vaccine rate of 99.7% at Palmetto Senior High School. Superintendent Dotres also highlighted the importance of addressing both physical and mental health needs, noting the pandemic’s lasting impact on students’ well-being.
