TSMC to Expand US Investment Amid Growing Customer Demand

Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC is expanding its investment in the United States due to strong demand from American customers, according to CEO C.C. Wei. The company plans to build five additional chip facilities in the US and has already booked production lines for this year and the next two years.

Wei stated that the $100 billion investment plan would not impact TSMC’s expansion in Taiwan, where the company will build 11 new production lines this year. This move comes amid concerns over China’s increasing pressure on Taiwan, but Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has assured that the government will provide support for domestic expansion.

TSMC is a key player in the US chip industry, providing components to major companies like Nvidia, Apple, and Qualcomm. The company’s increased presence in the US is expected to alleviate supply chain risks for these firms.

However, US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on semiconductor imports, which could potentially disrupt TSMC’s operations. Wei acknowledged this concern but emphasized that the company will continue to build new production lines in Taiwan despite potential challenges.
