Rare 7-Planet Alignment Captured in Breathtaking Panorama

Astrophotographer Josh Dury captured a rare celestial event on February 28, as seven planets aligned in a spectacular formation. The alignment, known as a “great planetary parade,” won’t occur again until 2040.

Dury’s photograph features not only the seven visible planets but also the moon, sun, and Earth in the foreground, making it an exceptional capture. To achieve this, Dury used an ultra-wide-angle lens to photograph different overlapping sections of the landscape over a 2.5-hour window, then stitched them together into a panoramic view.

The alignment required precise planning and ideal sky conditions. Clear night skies allowed Dury to capture not only the planetary lineup but also zodiacal light and two stunning deep-space objects: the Andromeda Galaxy and the Triangulum Galaxy.

With Saturn disappearing from view after March 2, this celestial gathering was brief, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for photographers and stargazers. Dury’s exceptional capture is a reminder of the intricate celestial dances occurring above us, showcasing the grandeur of the cosmos.
