Winnetka-Northfield Library District Celebrates 50 Years

The Winnetka-Northfield library district will mark its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a special photo exhibit showcasing the district’s history and growth over five decades.

Executive director Monica Dombrowski has been working on the project since this spring, inspired by photos from the district’s past and the recent digitization of decades-old community newspapers. The exhibit features seven standalone panels of photographs illustrating key moments in the district’s history, including the evolution of library services and creative programming.

The district was founded in 1974 as a response to the need for more resources in both Winnetka and Northfield. By becoming a library district, residents could contribute to the funding and have access to two locations. The exhibit highlights this pivotal moment in the district’s history and its impact on the community.

Residents are encouraged to attend the celebration and share their personal stories of using the library over the years. Dombrowski hopes that future generations will be inspired by the library’s legacy and contribute to its continued growth.

The photo exhibit will run until February 8, and a special cake-cutting ceremony is planned for the anniversary celebration on December 7 at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public and promises to be a nostalgic look back at the district’s rich history.
