The Social Security Administration (SSA) has sent over $7.5 billion in retroactive payments to 1,127,723 people, with the average payment being $6,710. The SSA has made significant progress in implementing the Social Security Fairness Act, which repealed two laws that reduced benefits for certain workers.
The act aims to increase monthly benefits by an average of $360 for those affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), and between $700 and $1,190 for those impacted by the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The SSA estimates that up to 3.2 million people are eligible for increased benefits.
To determine if you’ll receive a larger payment, check your mailbox for notices in the coming weeks. If you’re unsure about your eligibility or haven’t applied for benefits before, contact the SSA. You can file an application online or by phone at 1-800-772-1213 (M-F, 9am to 6pm ET).
Be cautious of telephone scammers pretending to be government employees and don’t provide immediate payment information. The SSA will adjust your monthly payments throughout March, which should be reflected in the April payment.
Note: The SSA recommends waiting until you receive your April payment to determine how much your monthly payments will increase.
