CEOs Urged to Model Digital Balance in Workplaces

The 16th annual “Give Digital Unplugged” (GDU) campaign, led by the non-profit Unplug Collaborative, encourages employers to promote digital balance among their employees. The 24-hour event starts on March 7 and aims to reduce screen time, promoting a healthier work-life balance.

Top leaders play a crucial role in setting an example for their employees. Becky Tahel, head of brand and marketing for GDU, advises executives to “put the screens down themselves” by taking breaks from emails and turning off notifications during family time or weekends. By doing so, CEOs create a culture that values digital balance and encourages employees to follow suit.

Employers can also establish device-free zones within their workplaces where employees can engage in creative activities or relaxation. These areas should be equipped with analog tools like whiteboards, comfortable seating, and natural elements. Employers are encouraged to provide boxes for employees to place their phones during meetings, signaling that they’re in a focused, unplugged stage.

To promote digital balance effectively, employers should focus on creating a cultural identity around it, rather than treating it as just another corporate mandate. By consistently modeling digital boundaries and providing structural support, employers can foster genuine enthusiasm among employees for adopting healthier digital habits.
