The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has issued an updated travel advisory warning lawful permanent residents, students, workers, and other immigrants legally present in the United States to avoid leaving the country over the next 30 days due to a potential new travel ban. The administration is expected to release a report identifying countries with “deficient” visa vetting practices by March 21, 2025, which could pave the way for a renewed travel ban.
Countries targeted by the new ban may include Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Palestine/Gaza, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. CAIR is extending its warning to immigrants who are nationals of Pakistan, following reports that the country may be included in the new travel ban.
The organization advises immigrants to take precautions, including:
* Consulting with an immigration attorney
* Avoiding international travel unless absolutely necessary
* Keeping copies of important documents
* Staying informed about their rights and potential visa revocations
CAIR is also concerned about the administration’s directive allowing for increased surveillance, denials of visas and residency applications, and deportation proceedings against individuals accused of holding “hostile attitudes” or engaging in “anti-American” speech. The organization is committed to protecting civil rights and opposing efforts to suppress free speech.
Immigrants who are citizens of countries at high risk of being included in the new travel ban should be aware of their rights and take steps to protect themselves. CAIR has released a guide on how to interact with immigration authorities and provide essential information on how to protect oneself during encounters with ICE agents.
