Ovechkin Closing In on Wayne Gretzky’s Goal Record

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is on pace to break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goal record before the season ends. Ovechkin needs just 10 more goals to surpass Gretzky’s record of 894, which has stood since 1999. As of March 7, Ovechkin has scored 32 goals in 47 games and is averaging a 45-goal pace.

To put his achievement into perspective, Ovechkin has played in 14 fewer career games than Gretzky, who holds the record for most career goals in NHL history. If Ovechkin doesn’t reach the goal record this season, he will still have one more chance to break it in his next contract.

Ovechkin’s impressive stats include a record-breaking 321 short-handed goals and 135 game-winning goals, tied with Jaromir Jagr for first place. He also holds records for most empty-net goals (64) and most goals scored against goalies (181).
