Tennis star Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire from his first-round Indian Wells match due to a wrist injury. The 29-year-old, who had surgery on his right wrist in September last year, struggled with knee and foot injuries for over 18 months before making his return.
Kyrgios’ return to tennis was hindered by pain in his wrist during a practice session earlier this week. However, he came back strong in the first set against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, eventually leading 7-6 (9-7) in the tie-break. Despite having a set point, Kyrgios began to physically struggle as the match progressed.
Kyrgios expressed his frustration and disappointment after retiring from the match. “No-one has had a wrist reconstruction and tried to play after that,” he said. The Australian runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022 admitted that the surgery was an experiment to see if he could compete again. He will now assess how his wrist recovers before deciding whether to participate in the upcoming Miami Open, scheduled for March 18th.
