A devastating storm has left Argentine city Bahía Blanca reeling after torrential rains, killing at least 13 people and displacing over 1,100 residents. The eight-hour non-stop downpour destroyed roads and bridges, causing widespread flooding that submerged buildings and left many areas without electricity.
The provincial government has sent helicopters, ambulances, food, and water to support the rescue efforts. Over 400mm of rain fell on Bahía Blanca on Friday, a significant amount considering the city typically receives around 600-650mm per year.
Newborn babies were evacuated from a hospital as authorities warned that the death toll could rise. The city’s population of over 330,000 is facing an unprecedented crisis, with many residents losing their homes and belongings. Provincial minister Carlos Bianco described the situation as “rebuilding a city” due to the extensive damage caused by the floods.
