Europe Warns of Islamist Group’s Rise Under Syria’s New Regime

Tensions in Syria continue to escalate as hundreds have been killed under the new regime, prompting warnings from Greece’s foreign minister. Giorigios Gerapetritis expressed concern about the ruling Islamist group, HTS, and its ties to extremist ideologies.

Gerapetritis urged Europe and the US to monitor the situation closely, stating that ethnic and religious minorities should be included in governance or face sanctions being lifted. The international community must also keep an eye on Turkey’s Blue Homeland Doctrine, which has led to incursions into Greek waters.

The Greek foreign minister emphasized the need for cooperation with India as a counterbalance to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. He noted that Greece is a key player in regional stability and security.

With the situation in Syria deteriorating further, human rights concerns are growing. The UN human rights commissioner has called for an immediate cessation of killings in coastal areas. As the conflict continues, it remains unclear whether HTS will be able to shake off its extremist reputation and win acceptance by the West.
