New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2025 season and potentially part of 2026. The procedure sidelines Cole for at least a year after he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament. A second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache led to the decision.
Cole’s injury is the second major blow to the Yankees’ starting rotation this spring, following Luis Gil’s lat strain. Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt will lead the team, with Marcus Stroman projected for the No. 4 spot. The Yankees may opt to sign a free agent or swing a trade.
Cole, a six-time All-Star and 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, was instrumental in the 2023 season. He has tallied at least 200 innings in six of his 10 full seasons. The team’s decision not to void Cole’s contract during the opt-out period means they can recoup some money for the lost time.
