SpaceX Delays NASA’s SPHEREx and PUNCH Missions Due to Weather

NASA’s SPHEREx telescope and PUNCH solar satellites have been postponed again for launch due to thick clouds and a spacecraft system issue. The next attempt is set for Tuesday night at 11:10 p.m. ET aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

SPHEREx will map the entire sky in infrared light, studying galaxy evolution and mapping water ice in our galaxy. PUNCH, a quartet of satellites, will analyze solar wind and the sun’s corona to improve space weather forecasting. Both missions orbit near Earth’s terminator line—between day and night—to optimize observations. The delay follows Saturday’s rocket issue and Monday’s cloud cover scrub.
