Microsoft will stop supporting its Remote Desktop app by May 27, 2025, after which it won’t function or be downloadable. Users must switch to the free Windows App, available since September 2023, for remote access to services like Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and personal PCs.
The Windows App offers streamlined access to multiple cloud and virtual desktop services via a customizable interface, supports multi-monitor setups, and integrates with Microsoft Teams. It also simplifies account switching and device redirection compared to the outgoing Remote Desktop app.
Microsoft emphasized the phaseout applies only to its standalone Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store. The older Remote Desktop Connection tool (built into Windows 11) remains supported, though it lacks cloud service integration and doesn’t support personal accounts.
After May 2025, connecting to Microsoft’s cloud services via the old Remote Desktop app will be blocked. Users should transition to the Windows App for uninterrupted access.
