Colossal Aims to Revive Extinct Species with Genetic Editing

Colossal, a startup using genetic editing to revive extinct species like woolly mammoths, dodos, and Tasmanian tigers, insists it has no plans for a “Jurassic Park” scenario. CEO Ben Lamm emphasized the need for de-extinction tools due to failed conservation efforts, calling it a moral obligation. The company aims to release woolly mammoth hybrids in Arctic habitats by 2028 and has raised over $1 billion in funding.

Lamm highlighted Colossal’s recent “woolly mouse” project—a genetically modified rodent with mammoth-like traits—as proof their edits are on track. Despite skepticism, the firm sees potential in synthetic biology to address global challenges like cancer treatment, plastic cleanup, and clean water access. Lamm also proposed a large-scale effort to preserve endangered species via bio vaults, though details remain vague.

Colossal collaborates with U.S. agencies and envisions future breakthroughs, including extended human longevity and engineered plants for ecological benefits. While dinosaurs remain out of reach due to DNA gaps, the company’s ambitious goals have sparked both excitement and caution in scientific circles.
