Gene Hackman’s Wife Filmed on Final Day Before Hantavirus Death

Surveillance footage captured Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa on February 11—the last day of her life—walking through a Santa Fe CVS, according to a Santa Fe County sheriff’s briefing. The video showed her wearing a mask likely due to Hantavirus, which later killed her. Betsy, 65, died from Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rodent-borne illness with a mortality rate of 38–50%, per New Mexico’s chief medical examiner.

Gene Hackman, 95, died days after his wife from cardiovascular disease worsened by Alzheimer’s. A pacemaker indicated he likely passed on February 18, a week after Betsy. Their bodies were found February 26 at their home, with no signs of trauma or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Betsy’s final activities included visiting a farmer’s market and a pet store before returning home around 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 11. She didn’t buy dog medication that day, leaving unanswered questions. Authorities noted her computer had unopened emails after that point, with no further activity recorded.
