Mac Jones Agrees to 2-Year Deal with San Francisco 49ers

Free agent quarterback Mac Jones has agreed to a two-year deal worth $7 million, including $5 million guaranteed, with the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN sources. The 26-year-old quarterback appeared in 10 games last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars, completing 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns.

Jones was acquired by the Jaguars from the New England Patriots in March 2023, replacing C.J. Beathard as Trevor Lawrence’s backup. In his time with the Patriots, Jones showed promise, earning a Pro Bowl alternate as a rookie after throwing for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns. However, he struggled to replicate that success under new coaches, including Bill Belichick, who brought back Bill O’Brien to run the offense.

Despite struggling in his final two seasons with New England, Jones has found a new opportunity with the 49ers. His departure from the Patriots follows a coaching change, as Josh McDaniels left for the Las Vegas Raiders and Matt Patricia and Joe Judge were replaced. The Jaguars’ decision to release Jones was reportedly due to poor performance, averaging just 15 points per game in his starts.
