Elon Musk recently claimed that a “massive cyberattack” on Twitter was carried out by Ukraine, citing IP addresses as evidence. However, cybersecurity experts disagree with his assertion.
According to the Wired publication, Musk’s IP data only provides insights into the geographic distribution of traffic sources, not the actual perpetrator’s identity or intent. One researcher even stated that Ukraine was not among the top 20 IP addresses involved in the attack.
A pro-Palestine hacking group, Dark Storm Team, has since claimed responsibility for the attacks in deleted Telegram posts. Experts say the hackers exploited technical oversights, such as unsecured origin servers on Twitter’s Cloudflare protection.
The company’s loose security measures allowed the incident to be far worse than it would have been otherwise. This is not the first time Twitter has faced chaos due to questionable decision-making and bugs.
Cyber experts suggest that a sophisticated cyberattack like this is more likely designed to be discovered, which eliminates the possibility of state actors being involved. Given Musk’s history of making enemies with his extreme-right ideologies, a DDoS attack against his social media platform is not surprising.
