Employers are being criticized for enforcing excessive office days on their staff, with a pioneer of flexible working practices calling it “command-and-control thinking”. Mark Mullen, chief executive of Atom Bank, claims that only 70-75 out of 550 employees attend the office daily, suggesting an attendance rate of just 15%.
Mullen, who has a background in banking and was once HSBC’s chief, believes that digital technology and artificial intelligence are changing the way work is done. He dismisses claims that staff slack off when working from home, saying “I don’t buy it, show me the evidence.”
