A US tourist who was filmed taking a wild wombat from its mother on a country road in southeastern Australia may be banned from the country if her visa review finds she has breached conditions.
Sam Jones, a social media influencer with 92,000 followers, was caught on camera picking up and running off with the baby wombat, causing distress to the mother. Experts say the action was irresponsible and could have triggered stress reactions in both animals.
Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is investigating Jones’ visa and has expressed skepticism about her returning to Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also weighed in, suggesting that Jones try her luck with another Australian animal that’s more likely to put up a fight.
Wildlife experts warn that separating a joey from its mother can be traumatic for both animals. Wombats do not typically attack humans, but their strong claws can cause serious damage and infection.
Jones has responded to criticism by saying the baby was “carefully held” for one minute and then released back to its mother, who was seen rejoining it in the bush. However, experts say that wildlife officials are still trying to determine where the video was shot.
Australia is home to three species of wombats, with only the common wombat not considered threatened or endangered. However, habitat loss and busy roads are putting increasing stress on these animals, according to wildlife veterinarian Tanya Bishop.
