Southwest Airlines Ditches Free Checked Bags Policy for Musicians

Southwest Airlines is ending its long-standing policy of allowing two free checked bags, a move that has left many independent musicians in Nashville frustrated and concerned about the future of affordable travel. Starting May 28, passengers without elite status or premium fare tickets will be required to pay for checked luggage.

The change aims to boost profitability amid rising operational costs and pressure from investors. However, this policy shift is a significant financial setback for the music community, with costs likely to be passed down to consumers in the form of higher ticket prices.

Independent country artist Mark Taylor estimates that the new baggage fees could cost his team an additional $15,000 a year. This increase in expenses could make or break profitable tours for many independent musicians.

Taylor warned that the policy change will have a direct impact on artists who travel with instruments and equipment, making it harder to enjoy concerts while keeping up with expenses. The Nashville music community is urging Southwest Airlines to reconsider its decision.

The airline claims the policy change is necessary for long-term financial stability, but many are evaluating options to continue touring without breaking the bank ahead of May 28’s deadline.
