AMD has leaked details about its upcoming Radeon RX 8800 XT graphics card through Seasonic’s wattage calculator. The card is expected to be announced next month and has a reported 220W Thermal Design Power (TDP) according to the online PSU calculator. This suggests that the RX 8800 XT will consume less power than its predecessor, the RX 7900XTX.
The leaked information indicates that AMD’s RDNA 4-based graphics card will be based on Navi 48, with 56 Compute Units and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. The name “RX 8800 XT” implies a non-XT variant, but rumors suggest that AMD may not release an RX 8600 model instead.
AMD’s market positioning strategy appears to focus on volume rather than performance, aiming to strengthen its foothold in the budget segment. This could lead to more affordable price tags for Nvidia’s mainstream offerings. The Radeon RX 8000 series is expected to arrive by early 2025 and will be showcased at CES 2025.
AMD is investing heavily in higher RT (Ray Tracing) performance and enhanced AI capabilities, which may enable the adoption of Frame Generation technology with Future Image Signal Processing (FSR). This could provide a competitive edge for AMD’s next-generation GPUs. The company faces competition from Nvidia, particularly in the sub-$300 segment, but this will ultimately benefit consumers.
Industry expert Hassam Nasir notes that if AMD can achieve similar performance to the 7900XTX at 220W and a price point of $600, it may struggle to meet demand for the next 12 months. Improved AI performance is also crucial for AMD’s success in the market.
