Atom Bank, the digital bank, has relocated its headquarters to Newcastle’s historic Pattern Shop. The move comes after securing a £9m renovation of the building, which is being used for flexible working and a four-day working week. The bank aims to create a workspace that employees want to leave home for, aligning with its low-carbon targets and becoming carbon positive by 2035.
The Pattern Shop’s strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) credentials match Atom Bank’s ambitious sustainability goals. The building’s unique character and rich history make it an ideal location for reimagining a company HQ. According to Mark Mullen, chief executive of Atom Bank, the move represents a bold statement about the future of work, prioritizing employee happiness over traditional office setups.
The relocation marks a significant coup for Newcastle City Council and igloo Regeneration, which worked together on the renovation project. Knight Frank secured the letting on behalf of the council and regeneration company. The move highlights the region’s growing reputation as a hub for innovative businesses and sustainability leaders.
