A New York woman has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Girl Scouts of the USA, alleging that their cookies contain heavy metals and pesticides. Amy Mayo claims that 100% of the tested cookies contained at least four out of five heavy metals, including aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
The study, conducted by GMOScience and Moms Across America, tested 25 cookies from California, Iowa, and Louisiana to ensure validity. However, Girl Scouts maintains that their cookies are safe to consume and meet food safety regulations.
According to the lawsuit, Girl Scout Cookies sales reach $1 billion annually, targeting children. The FDA has stated that the study’s findings do not pose a health risk, as it compared to EPA water safety standards, which don’t apply to food.
The organization claims that heavy metals occur naturally in soil and that trace amounts of glyphosate are found in produce. Despite controversy surrounding the study’s results, Girl Scouts insists that their cookies meet all necessary regulations.
