A deadly flu outbreak has hit Prince George’s County schools, claiming the lives of two elementary school students. The two deceased students attended different schools in the county. In addition to these fatalities, 72 cases of flu have been reported at James Madison Middle School and 17 cases at Francis Fuchs Early Childhood Center.
Superintendent Millard House expressed concern about the situation, warning that people often underestimate the severity of the flu. To combat the spread of the virus, schools are increasing disinfection efforts, providing hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies, limiting high-contact activities, and requiring masks in certain situations.
Families are being urged to keep their children at home if they show symptoms of illness. Schools and the health department will offer flu vaccination clinics at affected schools and through the county health department. Vaccinations are also available at local doctor’s offices or pharmacies.
The incident has prompted a heightened sense of alertness, with the school system taking proactive measures to limit the spread of infection.
