High-Fat Diet Linked to Rapid Brain Inflammation in Older Adults

A new study from Ohio State University suggests that a high-fat diet can cause significant memory impairments and inflammation in the brains of older adults within just three days.

Researchers conducted the study on rats, which found that brain inflammation and memory decline occurred independently of obesity. The diets used had 60% of calories coming from fat, similar to popular fast-food options.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Ruth Barrientos, notes that “unhealthy diets and obesity are linked, but they are not inseparable.” She suggests that changes in the brain occur within three days, long before obesity sets in, which may be causing memory impairment.

This research highlights the importance of a diet on brain health, regardless of weight. It warns of the potential link between high-fat diets and accelerated brain ageing, independent of obesity.
