Slanted Wins Top Honors at 2025 SXSW Film Festival

The 2025 SXSW Film and TV Festival announced its award winners on Wednesday night, with Amy Wang’s “Slanted” taking home the top prize as this year’s narrative feature winner. The film is a satirical thriller that examines racial identity in a bold and skin-tingling new way.

Director Amy Wang drew from her personal experience to create a haunting piece that lingers long after the credits roll. The jury praised her vulnerability and delicate filmmaking, which make “Slanted” both specific to the fractured identity of Asian Americans and universally relatable in its theme of desperately needing to belong.

Amanda Peet took home a special jury award for performance for her role in the film “Fantasy Life,” directed by Annapurna Sriram. The jury praised Peet’s frankness about the perils and pitfalls of the entertainment industry, which she brings to her portrayal of a flailing actress with a stalled-out career.

The 2025 SXSW Film Festival also honored other talented filmmakers and actors, including Annapurna Sriram for her work in “F–ktoys” and winners in various categories such as narrative short, documentary feature, and animated shorts. The festival’s special awards included the Redbreast Unhidden Award, Vimeo Staff Pick Award, and Janet Pierson Champion Award.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival celebrates innovative storytelling and talented creators from around the world. With its diverse range of award winners and honorees, the festival is a must-attend event for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
