Tech companies Amazon, Google, and Meta have signed a pledge to support efforts to triple nuclear power globally by 2050. The move marks growing support for expanding nuclear power among leading industries, finance, and governments. The pledge, led by the World Nuclear Association, is nonbinding but highlights the need for reliable energy sources as technology companies build out artificial intelligence centers.
The tech sector has turned to nuclear power after concluding that renewables alone won’t provide enough reliable power for their energy needs. Amazon and Google announced investments last October to help launch small nuclear reactors, still under development, which aim to reduce costs and timelines associated with new reactor builds in the US.
Meta has also issued a call for nuclear developers to submit proposals to help add up to 4 gigawatts of new nuclear power in the US. The pledge is part of a growing trend towards expanding nuclear power globally, driven by increasing energy demand from tech companies like Amazon and Google.
The World Nuclear Association hosted the pledge on the sidelines of the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston, where it was announced that more than 20 governments and financial institutions had previously signed similar pledges.
