Weight-Loss Medications May Help Cut Back on Drinking Alcohol

A recent study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro can help people cut back on drinking alcohol. The study, which surveyed over 14,000 members of the WeightWatchers program who took these medications, found that about 45% of those who drank alcohol reported reducing their consumption.

The medication, which belongs to the GLP-1 class, works by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar. This class of drugs has been shown to be effective in treating obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Additionally, previous studies have found that GLP-1 medications can help people with substance use disorders.

A Morgan Stanley survey of over 300 GLP-1 users reported similar results, with about 56-62% of alcohol consumers cutting their drinking after taking the medication. While research hasn’t yet proven a causal link, clinical trials are underway to better understand the effects of GLP-1s on alcohol and tobacco consumption.

The findings suggest that weight-loss medications may be a useful tool in helping people cut back on drinking alcohol, particularly for those with severe obesity and heavy drinking habits.
